Harlan Hill is a Democratic consultant who has decided he wants to support Donald Trump in the 2016 election and he’s learning the hard way that the left is very unforgiving in situations like this one.
He tells his story at The Hill:
You will never get fired for supporting Hillary
There have never been two candidates for president so loathed, as Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump — they both have their own separate issues. Clinton has the warm embrace of elites and the District of Columbia establishment, while Trump has found the unwavering support of disenchanted middle class Americans.
That juxtaposition is telling, because it drives the behavior of the consultant class. It reminds me of the saying, “you never get fired for buying IBM.” Well, you will never get fired for supporting Hillary.
There is a huge difference for those supporting Trump. The Republican and Democratic establishments have made it clear — if you work for, or support Trump and you are a pariah.
I am on the wrong side of this power dynamic. I am a Democratic consultant with over 120 domestic and international campaigns under my belt. This year I made the careful, but personally damaging decision to flip for Trump.
First, let me say that I have been transitioning out of consulting. I take on projects that interest me, not clients — I need to pay the bills. Most of my days are spent at Fox News, working with technology startups and finding refuge in midtown Manhattan coffee shops. Still before announcing my support for Trump on cable news, my business was successful. However, that changed quickly.
New business dried up and most of my legacy clients had to move on. I understand, it’s not personal, it’s politics. One of my mentors once told me that a consultant should never be in the headlines. It’s a distraction from the client. I get it.
Maybe he can rebuild his business with Republican clients.
There’s no easy answer here.
At least he supports Trump!
