It’s funny how things change. Democrats are preparing to shut down the government because Republicans won’t give them everything they want. But back in 2013 when Obama was still president, Chuck Schumer compared this to a hostage situation.
Here’s what he said during an appearance on ABC News in 2013 via NTK News:
SEN. CHUCK SCHUMER: Speaker Boehner comes in and he says, basically, it’s sorta like this. Someone goes into your house, takes your wife and children hostage, and then says ‘let’s negotiate over the price of your house.’ You know, we could do the same thing on immigration. We believe strongly in immigration reform. We could say ‘we’re shutting down the government, we’re not gonna raise the debt ceiling, until you pass immigration reform.’ It would be governmental chaos.“

The liberal media also has a very different view of shutdowns now. Look at the tweet below from NBC News and note the way the issue is framed. It sounds like they’re saying the Democrats win if the government is shut down:
