New Jersey’s New Democrat Governor Restores Obamacare Mandate For The State

Let this serve as a warning for the 2018 midterm elections. Democrats never change and if they retake power, this is a preview of what they will try to do. Phil Murphy has only been in office in New Jersey for a short time and this was clearly one of his priorities.

NJ Gov. Murphy Reinstitutes Statewide ObamaCare Individual Mandate

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (D) signed a bill this week that effectively restored the ObamaCare individual mandate provision, Fox & Friends reported.

President Donald Trump signed a federal bill in 2017 repealing the mandate — effective 2019 — which requires Americans to purchase health insurance or pay a penalty, Jillian Mele said.

Murphy also approved a measure to assist health insurers in funding “high-risk consumers,” the Asbury Park Press reported.

State Sen. Joe Vitale (D-Middlesex), a key sponsor of the bill, said the law is “needed to maintain a foundation for the insurance market” and to ensure the viability of the federal ObamaCare law, the paper reported.

Under the new law, New Jersey residents who do not have insurance will face a penalty equal to 2.5 percent of their income or $695 per taxpayer — whichever is greater, with a maximum penalty of $2,085, the Associated Press reported.
