Top Democratic staffer resigns after ‘inappropriate conduct’

The chief of staff for Ohio Senate Democrats was asked to resign after “inappropriate conduct toward staff” came to light.

Mike Premo, who served as chief of staff to Ohio Senate Democrats, resigned Monday evening at the suggestion of Ohio Senate Minority Leader Kenny Yuko, a Cleveland-area Democrat.

“Recently, concerns of inappropriate conduct toward staff came to my attention and I found the information to be credible,” Yuko said in a statement Monday.

Deputy Chief of Staff George Boas will fill Premo’s role until a permanent replacement is selected. Additional details about the “inappropriate conduct” were unavailable Monday.

“Senator Yuko informed us that he asked for the resignation of his chief of staff due to concerns expressed by subordinate employees about his conduct,” said John Fortney, spokesman for Senate President Larry Obhof. “While no complaint has been filed, we are working with Senator Yuko and his staff to ensure that all appropriate steps are taken in this matter.”

Active on social media, Premo recently drew the ire of the Fraternal Order of Police of Ohio for responding to a tweet of Columbus Police Department assisting a dog. Premo tweeted that it would be nice if police treated black people as well as they treat dogs. Premo’s twitter account was suspended or deleted Monday.
